KOLKATA (CALCUTTA) - BUBANESHWAR - PURI - GOPALPUR - KOLKATA (CALCUTTA) - (8 nights)
An opportunity for those who have perhaps already seen some of India's most popular sights to explore another India, this journey to Bengal and Orissa takes you off the 'beaten track' - unfolding encounters with local history, tradition and cultures that are no less fascinating than those of the more visited states to the west. From the faded imperial grandeur of Calcutta to the amazing temples of Bubaneshwar, Konark and Puri and the beautiful shoreline of the Bay of Bengal, this is an essentially 'different' tour full of unexpected and memorable colour and contrasts.

Konark Sun Temple   Lingaraja Temple - Bubaneshwar

Day 1 London/Kolkata (Calcutta)
Depart London Heathrow by overnight scheduled flight.

Day 2 Kolkata (Calcutta)
On arrival transfer to the Taj Bengal for a 2-night stay (Superior Room & Breakfast). Remainder of day at leisure.

Day 3 Kolkata (Calcutta)
Half-day city tour of Calcutta, visiting St Paul's Cathedral, the Victoria Memorial and the Museum. The capital of West Bengal, set on the banks of the Hooghly River, was once the capital of British India, whose fading monuments are the grand imperial buildings of the city, incongruous against the backdrop of the teeming streets and commercial clamour of today's hectic city.

Day 4 Bubaneshwar
After a morning boat ride on the Hooghly River, transfer to the airport for your afternoon flight to Bubaneshwar. On arrival transfer to the Trident Hilton for a 2-night stay (Deluxe Room & Breakfast).

Day 5 Bubaneshwar
The capital of Orissa is often known as the 'Temple City' thanks to over 7,000 great temples that once existed around the Bindusagar tank. Though many have succumbed to the passage of time, hundreds survive still - and this is one of the few places in India to retain archaeological remains of such antiquity. The day is dedicated to seeing some of these amazing shrines - with a morning visit to the majestic Lingaraja and Rajarani temples and afternoon exploration of Udaigiri and Khandagiri , with a visit to the Ashoka Peace Pagoda at Pipli.

Day 6 Bubaneshwar/Puri
Drive from Bubaneshwar to Puri (35 miles/1 hour), pausing en route to marvel at the exquisitely carved 13th century Konark Sun Temple (a World Heritage Site) and to visit the Craft Village at Pipli. Check in at the Hans Coco Palm (Deluxe Room & Breakfast). On the beach-edged shores of the Bay of Bengal, Puri is one of the four holiest cities in India and revolves around the great Jagannath temples and its famous Rath Yatra Hindu festival.

Day 7 Puri/Gopalpur
Drive to Gopalpur (80 miles/3 hours) and check-in at the Swosti Palm Resort for a 2-night stay (Standard Room & Breakfast). Remainder of the day at leisure. Set beside one of Orissa's most pristine beaches, backed by dunes, Gopalpur-on-Sea was once a humming port for rice from Rangoon - but today the traders and sailors have largely given way to sun-lovers and surfers.

Day 8 Gopalpur
At leisure to enjoy Gopalpur's lovely setting beside the Bay of Bengal.

Day 9 Gopalpur/Kolkata (Calcutta)
Morning departure for the drive to Bhubaneshwar (95 miles/4 hours), en route visiting the huge Chilka Lake with its many migratory birds. Depart Bhubaneshwar airport by midday flight to Kolkata. On arrival transfer to the Taj Bengal (Superior Room & Breakfast).

Day 10 Kolkata (Calcutta)/London
Day at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your departure flight for London

Day 11 London
Arrive London Heathrow.
