This 20 room ecolodge built in a malay Longhouse
style is located in one of the worlds best wildlife sancturaries
- the Kinabatangan River Basin. One of the reasons for this is the
Kinabatangan River which is Sabah’s longest and Malaysia’s
second longest river. As it meanders through a flood plain it creates
numerous ox-bow lakes making an ideal environment for some of the
best wildlife and birdlife found in Malaysia and giving this region
the highest concentration of Proboscis Monkeys and Orang Utans in
Malaysia. It is one of 2 known places in the world to be inhabited
by 10 species of primate (4 of which are endemic to Borneo) and
also where 4 colobines inhabit the same place - namely Proboscis
Monkey, Silvered Langur, Maroon Langur and Grey Langur.
Environmental standards are very important to
the Sukau Rainforest Lodge which has its own code of practice. The
lodge donates to Borneo Ecotourism Solutions & Technologies
(BEST) which benefits the local community through conservation projects.
The lodge is also involved in a tree planting programme in which
guests are welcome to participate. Seedlings are bought from the
local community and planted in a 64 acre site adopted by the lodge.
Its tour boats are equipped with silent electric motors which are
used when getting close to the riverbank so as not to disturb the
wildlife.
This enviromentally caring attitude also extends
to the facilites of the lodge which has its own electricity generators
and solar heated water. It is also 100% self-sufficient on water.
Rainwater is harvested, filtered and purified for kitchen and guests
use. No waste is discharged into the river. Organic materials are
composted while non biodegradable materials are separated and returned
to Sandakan for disposal and recycling. Other facilities of the
lodge include a 1500ft "Hornbill Boardwalk", (the largest
covered boardwalk in Borneo which has 2 elephant passes for elephants
to pass on their migration route), open lounge area, restaurant,
open deck, library, satelite phone, internet access, gift shop,
covered varendah and an enclosed hanging garden. All twenty rooms
are twin bedded with ceiling fan, mosquito netting, dressing table,
attached bathroom with toilet, hot water, shampoo/soap dispenser
and wall to wall ceramic tiles.
