Sri Lanka A Cultural Tour

Colombo - Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Bundala Wildlife Park - (9 Days/6 Nights)

The perfect introduction to the eventful history and rich traditions of Sri Lanka, its exotic culture and colourful wildife - and of course some of the island's finest scenery - this comprehensive private tour offers you the best of Sri Lanka in a comfortable and unhurried way. At the end of the itinerary you can choose to stay on at the beach hotel of your preference - or perhaps to continue to the Maldives.

Day 1 London/Colombo
Depart London-Heathrow by Sri Lankan/Emirates Airlines overnight flight.

Day 2 Colombo
On arrival you will be met and transferred to the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel - originally built by a British general during the colonial era and set on a rocky headland overlooking the Indian Ocean. Afternoon Colombo city tour of Colombo. Overnight Mount Lavinia Hotel - Bay Wing (Room & Breakfast).

Day 3 Colombo/Sigiriya

This morning you head for the hills, pausing en route at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage for abandoned and orphaned wild elephants. Drive on to Kurunegala and Dambulla - the latter a cultural treasure-chest with its series of spectacular caves and Buddhist murals. Continue to the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya, built by King Kasyapa in 473 AD when invasion threatened. The fortress sits atop a great rock over 600 ft high, ringed at its base by lovely water gardens. A steep climb reveals the rock's celebrated fresco gallery of 'heavenly maidens'. Check-in at The Culture Club for a 2-night stay (Room & Breakfast).

Day 4 Polonnaruwa
Morning tour of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital. Remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 5 Sigiriya/Kandy
After breakfast depart for Kandy - on the way visiting Matale with its famous spice gardens and batik factory. On arrival in Kandy, Sri Lanka's colourful hill capital clustered around a beautiful lake, check in at Le Kandyan Hotel for an overnight stay (Room & Breakfast). Evening visit to the stunning golden-roofed Dalada Maligawa, where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined. Witness a special Pooja ceremony and enjoy a pageant of traditional Kandyan dancing.

Day 6 Kandy/Nuwara Eliya
This morning explore Kandy's lively bazaar, markets and the arts and crafts centre. Then drive to Nuwara Eliya, visiting tea plantations on the way. Overnight at The Grand, a former residence of British Governors (Room & Breakfast in New Wing room).

Day 7 Nuwara Eliya/Hambantota
Morning tour of Nuwara Eliya. At some 6,000 ft above sea level Nuward Eliya is known for its invigorating mountain climate and scenery and it was always the favourite hill station of the British. The charm of its old colonial character is still evident today in the English-style country houses and the 18-hole golf course. In the afternoon drive to the coastal town of Hambantota to overnight at the Oasis Chalet (Room & Breakfast).

Day 8 Hambantota/Colombo/London (or Sri Lanka Beach Hotel or the Maldives)

Early start before sunrise for the jeep ride into the unspoilt wilds of the nearby Bundala Sanctuary, with its rich birdlife, before returning to the hotel for breakfast. Then travel by road to Colombo airport for your overnight Sri Lankan Airlines flight to London-Heathrow; or transfer to the beach hotel of your choice for an extended stay in Sri Lanka; or fly on to the Malé to conclude your holiday with a relaxing beach finale in the Maldives.

Day 9 London
