Splendours of Kerala Tour

A wonderfully relaxing 'Beach and Backwater' holiday that combines the dazzling beauty of Kerala's southern Indian Ocean coast with the gentle charm of the magical backwaters, which you can explore and enjoy both on water (on a private 3-night cruise by traditional houseboat) and on land (at the serene lakeside Kumarakom Lakeside Resort).

Day 1 London/Colombo
Depart London-Heathrow by overnight flight.

Day 2 Colomobo/Trivandrum/Chowara

Day 6 Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari)

Full-day excursion to Cape Comorin, India's 'Land's End' and the southernmost tip of the mainland - the confluence of the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Take a ferry to the Swami Vivekananda Memorial Rock. The urn carrying some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes was immersed in the three seas at Kanyakumari and Gandhi Mandapam is a memorial to The Mahatma. Watch the sunset at Cape Comorin - if you are there on a full moon evening you can see the sun set and the moon rise simultaneously!

Day 7 Chowara/Thottapally/Backwater Cruise
After breakfast travel by road to Thottapaly to board your traditional kettuvallam houseboat to enjoy a 2-night cruise on the famous Kerala backwaters that criss-cross through the countryside as deep or shallow channels or canals. Visit a coir-making village en route, anchoring at Trikunnapuzha for lunch. In the afternoon cruise through the Karumadi Canal to Karumadi Kuttan, site of an 11th century statue of the Buddha. The next stop is Champakulam, to visit St Mary's Church and the local market - and to see the boats used in the famous snakeboat race. Dinner at Moonnattumugham, with overnight on board.

Day 8 Backwater Cruise
This morning cruise to Moncompu for a village walk and to see to the Bhagavathi Temple, one of the oldest temples on the banks of the backwaters. Cruise on to Pulincunnu and visit a traditional Kerala house. Anchor at Kavalam for lunch, before cruising past paddy fields to Vembanad Lake. Dinner at Cherukayal, with overnight on board

Day 9 Backwater Cruise/Kumarakom
After breakfast cruise to Alleppey, centre of the backwaters, often referred to as the 'Venice of the East'. Transfer by road to stay for three nights (Room & Breakfast) at the Kumarakom Lake Resort, a heritage resort spread over 11 acres of landscaped grounds overlooking the vast expanse of the Vembanad Lake.
