On Peninsular Malaysia’s north-east coast, within
30 miles of Kuala Terengganu, and surrounded by
lush tropical jungle, the extraordinarily beautiful
setting of this tranquil 369 sq km man-made lake
has made Lake Kenyir something of a Mecca in
the region for nature and sports lovers. Created
behind one of South-East Asia’s largest and
highest rock-filled dams, the pristine waters of the
lake are punctuated by some 300 islands, formed
from the summits of hills that rose from the old
valley floor before the area was flooded.
Conditions for watersports and fishing are perfect,
while the islands also offer jungle trekking. One
even has a 9-hole golf course; here you can stay at
the Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa, complete with
swimming pool and a range of outdoor activities.
