This former fishing community is now a modern town and the state capital of Terengganu. Its main claim to fame derives from its rich cultural heritage and handicraft traditions - the fascinating Central Market has many tempting locally made items such as batiks, silks, songket weaving, brocade and brassware. The peaceful coastal surroundings are unspoilt, with long sandy beaches edged by clear seas rich in marine life, and traditional boat-building by hand can still be seen.
