Jodhpur,
Jaisalmer & Bikaner
Fuller
exploration of the princely state of Rajasthan will allow you to immerse
yourself in the unique travel experience offered by the vast horizons
of the Thar Desert. The 16th century city of Jodhpur, flanked by the
Mehrangarh Fort and the majestic sandstone palace of Umaid Bhawan
(now an hotel), still conveys a sense of fading grandeur through its
richly sculpted palaces and residences, sunlit lakes and lush gardens.
From Jodhpur you can travel to Jaisalmer, once a major centre on the
desert camel trade routes - and whose narrow lanes lined by intricately
carved 19th century merchants' houses (havelis) are today a major
Rajasthan attraction. Bikaner is another 'must see' for the serious
Rajasthan traveller - founded in the 15th century and a place of great
palaces and resplendent temples of red and yellow sandstone displaying
some of the finest artistry of Rajput civilisation. |
