Ceylon Revisited Tour

Colombo - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Bandarawela - Mount Lavina - (10 Days/7 Nights)

A fascinating themed tour for the traveller seeking to discover the evocative atmosphere of the colonial Sri Lanka of yesteryear, then known simply as 'Ceylon'. The itinerary embraces a range of locations where echoes of a lost era of colourful old 'period' hotels, colonial Governors' Residences and tea planters' bungalows are at their most palpable and intriguing. And as you travel to them you'll enjoy a superb natural canvas that encompasses hill and mountain scenery that is some of the finest anywhere in Indian Ocean.

Day 1 London/Colombo
Depart London-Heathrow by Sri Lankan/Emirates Airlines overnight flight.

Day 2 Colombo
On arrival in Colombo, you will be met and transferred to the Galle Face Hotel, set at the sea's edge, for an overnight stay (Room & Breakfast). In the afternoon enjoy an orientation tour of the Sri Lanka capital.

Day 3 Colombo/Kandy

After breakfast drive to Sri Lanka's fascinating old hill capital of Kandy (visiting en route the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage for abandoned and orphaned wild elephants). Check in at the Hotel Suisse, a former colonial mansion overlooking the picturesque lake and your base for a 2-night stay (Room & Breakfast). In the afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour, including the gold-roofed Dalada Maligawa (where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined) and the famous Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya.

Day 4 Kandy
A day for sightseeing and shopping in Kandy, including visits to the typical market place, arts & crafts manufacturers and the Tea Museum - unique in the world.

Day 5 Kandy/Nuwara Eliya
Depart by train on a steep winding journey through beautiful mountains to Nuwara Eliya. The line survives as a lasting tribute to the skills of its early-20th century British engineers. On arrival transfer to The Grand Hotel, a former residence of British Governor Sir Edward Barnes where you stay for the next two nights (Room & Breakfast)

Day 6 Nuwara Eliya
Enjoy a morning excursion to Horton Plains in the central high country - Sri Lanka's highest plateau, 7,200 ft. above sea level. This is a wonderfully scenic area whose landscapes vary from mountains to grasslands, from marshes to trout streams. In these refreshing surroundings, too, are cultivated Sri Lanka's rich-flavoured high-grown teas. In the afternoon explore Nuwara Eliya, followed in the evening by dinner at the famous old Hill Club.

Day 7 Nuwara Eliya/Bandarawela
Morning visit to a tea plantation and factory to see how the raw green leaf is turned into the familiar final product of a 'cuppa'. Afternoon at leisure to stroll in the plantation and enjoy the invigorating climate. Overnight at the Bandarawella Hotel (Room & Breakfast).

Day 8 Bandarawela/Mount Lavinia

Leave this morning for the drive to Kithulgala, setting of David Lean's film masterpiece, The Bridge on the River Kwai. Continue to the outskirts of Colombo to overnight at the legendary Mount Lavinia Hotel (former home of Sir Thomas Maitland and set beside the Indian Ocean) for your final night in Sri Lanka (Room & Breakfast). Afternoon at leisure.

Day 9 Colombo/London (or Sri Lanka Beach Hotel or the Maldives)
Transfer to the airport for your overnight Sri Lankan Airlines flight to London-Heathrow. Alternatively transfer to the beach hotel of your choice for an extended stay in Sri Lanka - or fly on to the Malé to conclude your holiday with a relaxing beach finale in the Maldives.

Day 10 London

Arrive London-Heathrow early morning.
