Bangalore
Founded in the 16th century, the capital of the state of Karnataka is situated mid-way between the coasts of Southern India. Bangalore today is among the sub-continent's burgeoning cosmopolitan cities and claims the name of the 'Silicone Valley' of India. Despite commercial pressures, the city boasts flower-filled gardens and parks, historical sites and architectural landmarks - to which have now been added modern shopping malls and a wealth of restaurants. Bangalore 'must sees' include the Vidhan Sabha State Secretariat, a superb fusion of traditional Dravidian and modern styles; the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens; the 18th century Tipu Sultan's Fort and Palace; and the 16th century temple dedicated to Nandi the Bull. The stunning Hoysala temples at Halebid and Belur are within easy reach.
