Than Just A Beach Destination |
| Malaysia
spans amazing contrasts of scenery, lifestyles and moods. Its interior
encompasses a vast mosaic of green and unspoilt landscapes - from
rice paddies and huge spice, rubber, oil-palm and tea plantations
to lush tropical forests that are the habitat of rare wildlife, deep
caves and dramatic mountains. This is a world of infinite space and
mystery, framing South East Asia's oldest jungles and highest peaks.
Man, too, has made his own fascinating imprint upon Malaysia, perhaps
at its most striking in the colourful customs and festivals of its
cosmopolitan ethnic groups - Malays, Chinese, Indians, |
|
Kadazans,
Dayaks and others. Picturesque kampung villages of waterside houses
on stilts, improbably carved temples and shrines, thriving communities
whose restless energy reflects Malaysia's booming economy - they're
all aspects of this flourishing country of countless contrasts.
But while history has forged unique links between
the two nations, the natural wealth that once lured early traders
and merchants here has now been replaced by riches of a different
kind. For today's British visitor, Malaysia beckons those seeking
the |
|
ideal holiday
formula - with sunburnt tropical beaches, dense virgin rain forests,
great mountains, fascinating wildlife, friendly people and flourishing
culture and traditions that provide a magical prescription for escape
from the routines and pressures of the everyday. Malaysia boasts a
superb collection, of idyllic beaches, palm-fringed to perfection,
complemented by impressive hotels for every taste - from peaceful
island hideaways, both simple and sophisticated to ultra-modern international
resort and city properties that match the finest of their kind anywhere. |

Among the most famous highlights of Peninsular Malaysia for the UK
visitor are: |
| The
Islands |
|
|
|
|
| The renowned
island resort of Penang, in the Indian Ocean
Malacca Straits and linked to the mainland by a bridge, is Malaysia
in microcosm, with a lush plantation-covered tropical interior that
rises to over 2,000ft; a beautiful coastline with lovely bays and
beaches on the north coast, the setting of a collection of impressive
resort hotels; and in Georgetown, with its Colonial architecture,
bazaars and old Chinatown, many reminders of the country's exotic
pedigree. Further north, on the sea boundary between |
|
Malaysia
and Thailand lies Langkawi, reached
by air from the mainland. One of 99 islands, this is a retreat for
the committed escapist, its superb beaches, romantic scenery, and
sophisticated hotel hideaways ideal for serious unwinding!
Tiny Pangkor Laut,
in the Malacca Straits, a mile from its larger neighbour Pangkor,
is the idyllic setting of one of Malaysia's most beautiful and luxurious
beach hotels, elegantly conceived in the style of a kampung waterside |
|
village,
and strictly for the self indulgent. Tioman,
off the East Coast in the South China Sea (and reached by boat), is
the stuff dreams are made of, and from its leading resort hotel you
can enjoy for yourself its glorious beaches, volcanic peaks, dense
rain forest and cascading waterfalls. Also off the East Coast are
Redang and the idyllic Perhentian
Islands, two of Malaysia's finest locations for diving. |

| The
East
Coast |
|
|
|
|
| Divided from
the western side of the Peninsula by mountains and forests, the quieter
East Coast offers a more timeless world of cool paddy fields, traditional
kampung villages, fishing boats, batiks and other handicrafts (here
the famous kites are made and flown) - and of course, a South China
Sea shoreline dotted with quiet and tempting beaches |

Mulu Resort - Mulu National Park - Sarawak |
| Sabah |
|
|
|
|
| Sabah is characterised
by its jagged mountains and necklace of offshore islands. The superb
coastal scenery can be enjoyed from a choice of resort hotels - and
there's wonderful turtle-watching in the Turtle Islands National Park,
as well as the under water excitement of beautiful Sipadan
island. Inland, the jungle offers fascinating wildlife-viewing,
including visits to the habitats of the orang utan and Proboscis monkey
(both unique to Borneo), and even the chance to trek up Mount
Kinabalu, South East Asia's highest mountain, or go white water
rafting on the Padas river. |

| Sarawak |
|
|
|
|
| Pride of place amongst
the attractions of Sarawak, one-time land of the famous British 'White
Rajahs' and Dayak headhunters, belongs to the unique experience it
offers to travel by boat along the rivers that thread through the
dense jungle interior, rich in exotic flora and fauna, and to stay
overnight in a native longhouse. There's
also the awe-inspiring Mulu and Niah
Caves - the former amongst the largest and most spectacular cave
complexes on earth, the other containing relics from Stone Age times.
Whatever your holiday preference - whether simply relaxing by a beach,
or exploring the interior (and there are excellent air services, and
a road network ideal for self-drive tours) Malaysia has a formula
to fit - sometimes exuberant, sometimes enigmatic, but always exotic! |
