the northern end of the Sarawak coastline, Miri owes its present
prosperity to the discovery of oil in the early 1900s. Today
it is a busy commercial centre and the third largest town in
the state of Sarawak - though one where a number of time-honoured
local traditions are still upheld. Miri is the jumping-off point
for the overland journey to renowned Gunung Mulu and Niah Caves
