Labuan
This appealing little island (you can drive around it in 90 minutes) off Sabah's north-west coast draws scuba divers enthusiasts from afar thanks to its fame as a centre for wreck diving. Its crystal-clear waters, tropical beaches, tranquil outlying islands, little Malay villages and dense interior rich in plant and animal life offer a wonderfully relaxing holiday setting. Served by air from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, it's a thriving free port with some intriguing past British connections.
