The state capital of Sarawak (the 'Land of the Hornbills') stands beside the Sarawak River, about 20 miles from sea, and is a fascinating mix of buildings old and new, lively markets and an attractive waterfront. Among its interesting sights are the State Mosque, Fort Margherita, the Astana (former royal palace and residence of the 'White Rajahs',), the renowned Sarawak Museum, the Central Market and ornate 19th century Tua Pek Kong Chinese temple. The Sarawak Cultural Village 40 minutes away is well worth a visit.
